I know it has been forever since I did my last post. Well today I finally finished Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. These ladies do a wonderful job of telling the reader how to eat healthy and why he or she should do it. In each chapter they tell you about the meat industry, the dairy industry, and of course our government and how they put the blinders on the nation on what is truly healthy for you. With their provocative language, graphic images, and compartmentalized chapters it makes it easy to understand and to read. All of it leading up to how we can change our lives, which to me is the best part about it. A lot of people tell you what you shouldn’t eat and why you shouldn’t, but they rarely tell you what you should eat, why, and where it can be found. They also continue to break down the foods and supplements that should be avoided if you want to try and shop on your own.

I thought that being a college student that eating like this would be so difficult because a lot of it involves cooking. What I have found out is a lot of can be bought like other things in the frozen food section, which makes me ecstatic because that means I can eat it when I have the time. Also because they do such a good job of writing out for me what I should eat, I’m able to take the list into a grocery store with me and make my decisions from there. I think that they do a very good job and people should really take the time to read their book to try and not only for the knowledge, but to try and live a healthier lifestyle as well..

With this book I have also bought Skinny Bitch in the Kitch which is a cookbook that they have put together including all the substitute ingredients and an important thing to me is that I’m still able to bake! There are healthy ways to enjoy chocolate cake and cheesecake and I plan on experimenting with it.

With the school year going on and reading my Biology textbook every night I had to take a break from reading for pleasure. What I have been doing though is trying to get my own small business off the ground by selling mark. products. Products by mark. have the same type of selling feel as Avon or MaryKay, but their prices are better and their style offers more fashion and trend setting qualities. I myself really enjoy the products and am trying to get others to enjoy it as well. If you are looking for affordable makeup and fashion contact me by email or Facebook. For first mark orders I’m offering 15% off to new customers!

I love the products because they are affordable for me being on a budget, but they also have tremendous quality.

Just think about it. Eyeshadows for $5, foundations for $12, cleansers for $8, and so much more.

One of the main things that I like about mark. products are the hookups. Hookups make you able to carry around eyeliner, concealer, lipgloss, mascara, and brushes in an easy to carry around container a little bit bigger than a lipgloss tube.

Once again check out my eBoutique online and my Facebook page to make your orders!!!

I already did a post talking about The Help and what the book is about, but this is one is to compare the movie and the book.

Once again I read the book before I went to the movie, but this time with a bit more separation in between. I think that the makers of The Help the movie did a very good job of staying close to the book without it changing a lot of other notions.

The only complaint that I had with the movie was that it took out some of the hard core matters that dealt with the African American community, like the murders, or Louvenia’s grandson, but most importantly with Constantine’s daughter. In the movie they made her black. That was a huge story in the book of how Constantine’s daughter was born with white skin, and that’s why she had to be sent away to Chicago. It was then her arrival to the Flinn’s house where she confused everyone into thinking she was white was how Constantine lost her job. Of course all of that was in a nutshell, but in the book it is a pretty big deal, and it was a constant question on Skeeter’s mind of why Constantine was fired, or quit, as put by her mother.

I was overall pleased with the movie, but it was just that giant miswrite that to me made it not an amazing movie, and one to truly rant and rave about. Until next time,

Grandma, what big ears you have!

The better to hear you with my dear…

Grandma, what big teeth you have!

The better to EAT YOU WITH my dear!

Sarah Blakley-Cartwright’s Red Riding Hood brings us down from the fairy tale world and back to where the original story of all of our beloved story time memories come from. Blakley-Cartwright puts a dark twist on the story of Little Red Riding Hood while also making it a love story. Valerie, Red Riding Hood, is caught in the middle of a love triangle she has a man who she is in love with, a man who is in love with her, and then the wolf who wants her. In her small village, terror strikes along with death as the werewolf attacks her sister, killing her as the first human victim. As the village wants revenge the hunt for the werewolf comes to the forefront of everyone’s mind. The only problem for Valerie is that her and the werewolf have a bond that makes the werewolf want Valerie without remorse. Because of this Valerie has to make a decision of who to be married to or who to spend the rest of her life with.

After I finished this…in one day, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about the book. It was great at bringing out the suspense and making the reader suspicious of all the characters to who the werewolf could possibly be, but in the end I was left unsatisfied and wanting to know more, and did not get my answers. I have not seen the movie, so I cannot make a comparison to the two, but it definitely grounds you to how the original fairy tales were told children, and not the sugar coated versions we tell today. Until next time.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a novel that can be eye opener to some. In The Help a young woman, Skeeter, decides that she is tired of what happens in Jackson, Mississippi to the help and to all the black people in her area. To stir things up she decides to write a book called, The Help, to show life from the point of view of the help. In order to do that she first had to find women who were willing to put their lives on the line to tell their stories about those who employ them. Not only did it affect the lives of the black women, but also alienated Skeeter from her friends, and the only man she ever had a relationship with. Writing the book brought out the courage in each of them and gave all of these women a purpose.

I highly recommend reading The Help. This story makes you laugh, cry, smile and feel invested in each one of the characters lives. The story is written so that different chapters are written from the perspective of different people, Skeeter, Minny, and Aibileen. The main controversy that I have heard about this novel is that it is written by a white woman, and some people in the black community don’t always like when someone tries to show how life was for the black community. Sometimes there is a lot of sugar coating and making it seem like the black community was okay with what was happening during that time. Other than that I personally loved the book and would most definitely recommend it to others. Until next time

Sarah Dessen‘s What Happened to Goodbye was not unlike any of her other books. In this novel a young gir, Mclean Sweet,l has been incredibly hurt by her parents scandal, and messy divorce. By the end of the custody battle she has decided to live with her dad who is a restaurant consultant. Because her dad has this time consuming job, she has to move around a lot making her constantly move away from friends and what she knows. This also makes her come up with a new identity for herself in each new place, from personality, involvement, and even her name. Mclean and her dad finally stop at a place that she grows to love, and accidentally starts to allow people into her life, and into her real name. It’s not until her relationship with her mother completely breaks that things start taking a turn for the worse.

What Happened to Goodbye, has the same sequence of events like in every other Sarah Dessen novel. Of course I love every single one of them and it never takes me more than 3 days to read them. In every novel, a girl has a hard life, someone particularly a boy changes her life, her life hits rock bottom, and then all of a sudden everything is good again. I enjoyed reading the novel because parts of it always touch my heart and makes me think about my own life. If you’re a hard core Sarah Dessen fan like myself you should definitely read this heart touching story. If you’re not a hard core fan, I still recommend this novel. Until next time

Normally I start off my posts by saying what the novel is about, but if you do not know what Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling is about then SHAME ON YOU!! If you do no know then you have missed out on a whole phenomenon of reading and movies that spread through the world, and into the hearts of every age group.

Before the last movie came out, and after I bought my midnight showing tickets with my friends, I decided that I was going to reread the seventh Harry Potter novel, much like the rest of the world. With the interruption of working at a summer camp, I quickly had to read the whole novel in 4 days. I managed to do it and finished the story the night before the movie came out.

The next day when I went to go to the midnight showing I had the whole story fresh in my mind, and I do believe that was my downfall in enjoying the movie. The movie had a completely different flow than the book did, with parts of the movie not meshing well with the book and wrong lines said that were not in the book. I also believe that the movie did not do a very good job of keeping the tension in the movie that the last few pages of the novel had. By the end of the movie I was not sitting on the edge of my seat understanding all the information that happened.

If I look at the movie separate from the book then yes, it was a very well put together movie, and I quite enjoyed it. I actually took my sister for her birthday because it came out on the same day. The movie did a very good job with the battle and what was going on in there, but it left out a lot of the information, which I thought was the best part of the whole story.

As usual we all have our own opinion and these are my opinion. I plan on seeing the movie again and maybe now that the book is not as fresh in my mind I will be totally engrossed in the movie as I planned. Until next time,

Keep Turning the Pages and in this case Watching the Screens

Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire, to me was no where near as amazing as Wicked was. This sequel is about a boy who is trying to find himself, and find out what his part in the world is supposed to be. Through out the novel he is constantly told that he has some of the qualities as his supposed mother Elphaba, but he cannot confirm or deny that Elphaba is his mother. For the rest of the novel he flies around the world to all the different parts to try and help whomever he can, while he searches for an old family friend.

I didn’t really enjoy Son of a Witch because it was a constant journey. There was not a destination, and there was not a climax. The very beginning recounting Elphaba’s life and the very end, where there is a surprise was great, but the places in the middle were painful to read. It took me over a year to make it through this novel, and I’m glad that I did, but I did not gain anything from reading this novel as a sequel to Wicked. I’m going to read his other novels, because they’re on different fairy tale characters, and I love his spin on these characters. So let’s see how many books I can finish this summer! Until next time.

I have no idea how I could do a father’s day post, and not pay homage to the woman who gave me the love for reading. My mother is the absolute best mother in the world. Sure we butt heads sometimes, but if we didn’t she wouldn’t be my mother.

In our house we have so many books just flowing out of every room and slowly taking over our house. Luckily for the house we have become part of the Kindle craze and have started buying some of our books on Amazon, so that they are a lot easier to take around.

My mother has always instilled a love of reading into my head that has gotten me very far being an only child. Now with school I have less time to read, but more time to want and my list is forever growing. My mother now doesn’t read as much, but she has found a second love, quilting.

As of now she has made tons of quilts, which are slowly taking over the house as well making the place the most comfortable place to read ever. She gifts, sells, and dreams of having a foundation to share quilts with the world in a museum. Her dream comes from the finding of her grandmother’s quilts, so she calls this dream the Clara Ford Foundation. She has support of many friends and family and one of these days her dream will be realized. I hope when I grow up I get to be close to where my mother is today in her style, manner, and way of life. It is because of her I still like to read and because of her I have someone to aspire to be.

After the Leaves Fall by Nicole Baart looks into the world of a young girl with a twisted family. Julia has had to deal with so many more issues than a normal girl by the age of 9 has had to deal with. When she was younger her mother left her and her father without looking back, and a few years later her father dies unexpectedly. When a girl has grown up in the church and then nothing but bad things happen to her it’s hard to remain close to her faith. Luckily she had her grandmother and a lifelong best friend of Thomas. Through these two she manages to get through middle school and high school without any other disasters. When she gets to college she believes that she has found the perfect guy for her, but he happens to be someone of authority. She is willing to break the rules a little bit, but rules are not always meant to be broken. Soon she notices that her life becomes awfully close to that of her mother’s.

I of course cannot tell a lie, and I do have to say that this book though still very good, is predictable and is like all other teen angst novels, about life, love, and abandonment. It’s a good easy read, but be prepared to know every twist and turn of the story before it happens.

Until next time, keep turning the pages
